Sophie sat nervously, waiting for her family to arrive. It had been five long years since the day they had all swapped bodies. She had been stuck in her brother Nathan’s body ever since, and the adjustment had been brutal. Losing her old life, her old self, had been harder for her than for anyone else. While the rest of the family seemed to settle into their new roles, Sophie had struggled to feel whole as a man.
“Hey, sis,” came a familiar voice from the doorway.
Sophie turned — and froze. The figure before her was both familiar and completely alien.
“What have you done to my body?” she gasped. “Those tattoos… that hair… and that top! You can see my—oh, God!”
Nathan smirked, walking closer, comfortably at home in what had once been Sophie’s skin.
“Chill, Sophie. It’s not really your body anymore, remember? Didn’t Mum say last time we saw each other — adjust and live your lives? That’s what I’ve done.”
Sophie’s stomach churned as she stared at the stranger her body had become.
They said nothing more until Nathan’s parents walked in. Like their children, they too had been living in swapped bodies for years. They were taken aback by the changes Nathan had made to Sophie’s body, though no one dared say much.
After some strained small talk and catching up, Sophie finally broke the silence. Her voice was tight, almost trembling.
“This was a terrible idea.”
Before anyone could respond, she stormed out.
An hour later, the family said their goodbyes and agreed to try again sometime. But when the next reunion came, Sophie didn’t show. Perhaps it was just as well — because that was the day Nathan introduced his new girlfriend, something that surely would have hurt Sophie even more.
