“Oh no, I dropped it overboard!” Katherine gasped, turning to see Maria’s shocked face.
“You did that on purpose! How are we supposed to swap back?” Maria demanded, leaning over the side of the boat. She quickly stepped back when she saw the cold expression on her sister’s face.
“Swap back? Why would I do that?” Katherine sneered. “Go back to being the sister no one notices? The one who can do no wrong in our parents’ eyes?”
Maria stared at her in disbelief. She had thought this whole body-swapping thing was just harmless sisterly fun.
“So… you’re stealing my life?”
“You’re getting it,” Katherine replied, looking down at her now-slim figure with a satisfied smile.
They docked at the shore in silence, the air heavy with betrayal.
Maria spun to face her. “I’m not letting you get away with this,” she hissed.
Katherine didn’t flinch. “Then drown trying.”
The next morning, Maria slipped away. Down by the black water, she searched for a boat. The stone was out there somewhere, beneath endless depths and shifting currents.
She found the rough spot where her sister had thrown it overboard. She dove once. Twice. Again and again, until her lungs burned and her muscles shook. The ocean offered nothing but cold and darkness.
After an hour, her strength was gone. Katherine’s body was not built for this. The stone was lost. So was her life.
Somewhere inland, Katherine was smiling as she knew that this body was hers forever.
